Immigration
One period of immigration in Bosnia and Herzegovina is during its civil war (more about that farther down on this page) from 1992-1995. The people mainly left Eastern Europe and immigrated to Western European countries and the United States. The reason for this period of immigration was because during the civil war the country was war torn and the towns and cities underwent frequent bombings. Another reason for this period of immigration was due to the lack of jobs. This lack of jobs was due to 1,000 percent inflation, making goods too expensive to buy. The people that made these goods were not needed, so they were out of work and needed to find work to support their families.

Ancient Civilization
About three thousand years ago, the area that today is called Bosnia and Herzegovina was called Illyricum. Illyricum was part of the mighty Roman Empire. The Roman Empire overtook the Ancient Greek Empire and was around from 756 B.C. to 400 A.D. Romans spoke Latin and were a very advanced civilization for their time. Their empire was very large and surrounded the Mediterranean Sea (photo at right). They practiced polytheism, or the belief of many gods. Their government was democratic, as most modern governments are today. The similarities between Ancient Rome and the United States today is that both of our governments are democratic. The differences are the language; the U.S. speaks English, the Ancient Romans spoke Latin. Another difference is that our clothing has many colors and a greater variety of styles, while the Ancient Romans mostly wore purple and white togas.

The Twentieth Century
W.W.II W.W.II affected Yugoslavia (where Bosnia and Herzegovina are located presently) because German and Italian forces invaded the area. Also, the Serbs and Croats attacked each other. After W.W.II Russia helped Yugoslavia rebuild. As a result of this, Yugoslavia became communist. The 1990's In 1990, communism ended and Yugoslavia formed into new nations. In the year 1992, a section of Yugoslavia became Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Serbs did not like that Bosnia had claimed its independence and started to fight against Croats and Muslims. This fighting was their civil war. It lasted until 1995, and caused great distruction (photo at right). In 1995, a cease-fire occured and Bosnia and Herzegovina became peaceful, although random fighting still continues today. When Bosnia claimed its independence they decided upon having a democracy. After the civil war, inflation declined and the economy began to steady.
